How to find the best cardiologist to manage your aortic stenosis
By ShareMD Connect
If you’ve been diagnosed with mild to moderate aortic stenosis, you probably know that you may have options to manage your disease. Or, you may have been told that it’s nothing to worry about. While that may be true, it doesn’t mean your diagnosis is something to ignore.
Physicians may recommend a “watch and wait” approach for those with mild, asymptomatic aortic stenosis. Additionally, for those with mild symptoms, medication management may be the best approach.
However, aortic stenosis is generally a progressive disease. And if your disease gets worse over time, your treatment plan may need to change. While “watch and wait” may be a good approach for someone with mild, asymptomatic aortic stenosis, it may not be the best option for someone experiencing moderate to severe symptoms.
Finding a provider that can adapt and respond to your aortic stenosis before it becomes urgent is critical for living longer and maintaining your quality of life. If your physician is still recommending that you “watch and wait”, even though your symptoms have become more severe, then it may be time to find a second opinion.
Here are three steps to take to find a cardiologist that’s right for you.
One of the best ways to find a qualified cardiologist is by looking for heart valve centers near you. A heart valve center is going to be made up of experts that have a variety of skill sets. Here, you’ll be more likely to find a cardiologist that has access to a multidisciplinary team, participates in research, and regularly performs either SAVR or TAVR procedures.
You may have to travel farther to find a heart valve center near you, but it’s worth exploring all the life-saving options available to improve your quality of life and long-term outcomes.
If your disease has progressed to the point where you’re considering surgery, it’s important to find a cardiologist who understands both SAVR and TAVR procedures.
These cardiologists will be able to refer you to a specialized heart valve team that can evaluate you and assess whether or not you’re a candidate for the minimally invasive procedure, TAVR, or if SAVR is a better treatment for you. Even for SAVR procedures, there are many options to discuss. For example, choosing the correct valve, considering the Ross Procedure, or even more minimally invasive surgical approaches.
The American College of Cardiology and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons maintains an active database of healthcare systems registered to perform TAVR procedures, which is a great starting point for finding a qualified provider.
